We organise freight transport in Lithuania from loading to delivery. We select a suitable vehicle, plan the route, stay in contact with the driver and, where necessary, keep the client informed about the main stages of the transport. We organise freight transport in Lithuania between the major cities – Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and Panevėžys – as well as to smaller towns, regional warehouses, factories and sites.

Freight transport in Lithuania in brief

Through trans.lt, UAB „Kauno logistikos agentūra“ organises domestic freight transport throughout Lithuania. We work mainly with business cargo, but we also serve private individuals when the nature of the cargo matches the transport services we provide. We select the transport solution according to the size of the cargo, the route, the deadline and the loading conditions.

We tailor the route to the specific deadline, load size and loading and unloading conditions. In domestic transport the entire route stays within Lithuania, so the schedule for loading, delivery and multiple unloading points can often be arranged more flexibly. The specific solution depends on the cargo, the route and vehicle availability. If your freight is travelling beyond Lithuania, see international freight transport. On this page we explain how freight transport in Lithuania works, what we pay attention to when planning a route and which factors determine the delivery time and price.

Route between Lithuanian cities

What does the price of freight transport depend on?

Freight transport prices depend on several factors: distance, the weight and dimensions of the cargo, the accessibility of the loading and unloading points and the required deadline. For a part load the price is usually more favourable, because it is shared between several clients whose goods are carried on the same route. The final freight transport price becomes clear only once all these factors have been assessed together.

How do we organise freight transport in Lithuania?

When planning a route, we first assess the distance between the loading and unloading points and the road conditions in the specific region. On that basis we select a vehicle that can reach even locations with difficult access.

On domestic routes, changes can often be agreed faster than on international ones, but this depends on vehicle availability, the route and the loading/unloading conditions.

We often serve several loading or unloading points on a single route, so the client does not need to book separate transport for each stop. This is particularly useful when goods need to be delivered to several cities in one day – for example, one vehicle handling loading in Kaunas and unloading in Vievis and Vilnius, or in Šiauliai and Mažeikiai. Freight transport in Lithuania organised this way often costs less than several separate shipments, because the route is planned as a whole.

Specifics of freight transport in Lithuania

When choosing domestic transport, it is worth knowing a few things that directly affect the route, deadline and price: seasonal road restrictions, city-centre requirements for heavy vehicles and what determines the final price.

Seasonal road restrictions

In spring, when temperatures rise and roads become more sensitive to loads, temporary restrictions on goods vehicles may apply to some district roads. Such restrictions are set by the responsible authorities, and the roads and periods concerned may differ from year to year. We take this factor into account in advance when planning the route in order to reduce the risk of unexpected delays.

City centres and heavy vehicles

In the central areas of Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda, heavy or oversized vehicles cannot always enter without restrictions. In such cases the cargo may need to be transferred to a smaller vehicle for the final leg. We discuss this detail with the client as early as the quote stage so that the delivery deadline is assessed realistically.

What vehicles do we use to carry freight in Lithuania?

We select the vehicle according to the cargo size and delivery location, not according to a standard scheme.

  • For smaller cargo or deliveries to a city centre, a van or small truck is often more suitable, as it can more easily get right up to the consignee.
  • For larger or heavier cargo between regions, we select a truck or trailer, taking into account the weight and dimensions of the cargo.
  • For several smaller shipments travelling in the same direction, we apply the part-load principle, so the transport cost is shared between several clients.

We decide on the vehicle after assessing the specific route, the loading conditions and the required delivery time, rather than offering one option for every case. Whether you order a one-off shipment or regular freight transport in Lithuania, the principle for selecting the vehicle remains the same.

Documents for domestic transport

Domestic transport does not usually require an international consignment note (CMR), but the cargo must be accompanied by a waybill or another document containing the data required for transporting the cargo.

  • i.VAZ. When cargo is carried by road within the territory of the Republic of Lithuania, the data of the waybill or other cargo transport document has, since 1 October 2016, been submitted to the State Tax Inspectorate (VMI) via the i.VAZ subsystem whenever such a document must be issued under the legislation.
  • Who submits the data. Waybill data is submitted to i.VAZ by whoever draws up the waybill. This may be the sender or another person who draws up the waybill and submits the data.
  • Electronic waybill. It is not mandatory: it is used only when the sender, carrier and consignee agree on it in advance; otherwise a conventional waybill may be used.

When organising transport, we agree in advance which documents are required for the specific cargo. If additional requirements apply to the cargo – for example, if it falls into the dangerous goods category – we discuss the list of documents as early as the quote stage.

Who needs freight transport in Lithuania?

Freight transport in Lithuania is often important not because of the distance itself, but because of the frequency and precision of delivery. Sometimes cargo only needs to travel a dozen or so kilometres, but at a precisely agreed time; at other times it matters more that goods reach several different cities on the same day. A few situations in which domestic transport is particularly relevant:

  • raw materials or products of manufacturing companies between warehouses;
  • replenishment of retail companies’ stock in the regions;
  • equipment, materials or palletised goods to sites;
  • a one-off shipment to another city or region.

In every case we tailor the solution to the cargo volume, deadline and route rather than offering one universal option for everyone.

Why choose our company for freight transport in Lithuania?

We organise routes in different regions of Lithuania every day, so we know where delays most often occur and take this into account when planning the route. We know the main logistics routes in Lithuania and when it is worth choosing an alternative road to reduce the risk of delay.

If something unexpected happens on the road, for example due to traffic or weather conditions, we can quickly adjust the route or offer another solution, because we work with carriers in different regions of Lithuania.

We work both with companies that need regular transport and with clients who need a one-off shipment. We carry anything from a single pallet to a full truckload – we match the transport solution to the actual volume rather than applying one standard solution to every case. If the cargo needs additional storage between stages, we arrange this in advance so that the goods do not wait in the warehouse longer than necessary.

We coordinate transport, warehousing (arranged through partners where needed) and documents as one process, so the client does not have to deal separately with several different suppliers and explain the cargo details again each time. When a route is repeated regularly, subsequent freight transport in Lithuania is planned faster, because we already know the client’s warehouse opening hours, loading specifics and the usual type of cargo.

FAQ

Who transports freight in Lithuania?

Through trans.lt, UAB „Kauno logistikos agentūra“ organises freight transport in Lithuania: we select the vehicle, plan the route, agree the delivery deadline and keep you informed about the main stages of the cargo’s journey. We assign a responsible contact to every transport, so the client knows whom to contact and receives a concrete answer rather than a general promise.

Do you deliver freight throughout Lithuania?

Yes, we organise freight delivery throughout Lithuania – to Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys, Alytus, Marijampolė and other cities and regions. We agree the specific route, vehicle and delivery time after assessing the loading and unloading locations.

Can you transport oversized or non-standard cargo?

Yes, depending on the dimensions and weight of the cargo, we select a suitable vehicle and, where necessary, use specialised equipment. We discuss such shipments individually so that all the specifics of the route are taken into account.

How long does freight delivery take in Lithuania?

Delivery time depends on the distance, route, cargo size, loading time and vehicle availability. Domestic transport can often be planned for a shorter period because of the shorter distances, but we state a specific deadline only after assessing the conditions of the particular cargo and route.

Can the cargo being transported be additionally insured?

Yes, additional cargo insurance can be arranged for a specific shipment and a specific transport. This is particularly relevant when carrying higher-value, fragile or hard-to-replace goods. The insurance terms, coverage limits and exclusions are set out in the specific insurance policy. You can read more about this on our cargo insurance page.

Which freight transport company should you choose in Lithuania?

When choosing a freight transport company in Lithuania, it is worth making sure that it knows local conditions well: seasonal road restrictions for heavy vehicles, traffic restrictions in city centres and the i.VAZ obligation for waybills. A clear responsible contact and conditions agreed in writing are also important. UAB „Kauno logistikos agentūra“ takes these factors into account when planning every domestic route.

Is i.VAZ required for domestic freight transport in Lithuania?

Not in every case. If, under the legislation, a waybill must be issued for the cargo and the conditions set by the State Tax Inspectorate (VMI) are met, its data is submitted via the i.VAZ subsystem. There are exceptions, so the obligation is assessed for each specific shipment. The data is submitted by whoever draws up the waybill, and when organising transport we check in advance who draws up the waybill in the specific case.
