Dangerous goods transport

What are dangerous goods?

Dangerous goods are goods which, due to their chemical or physical properties, may pose a risk to human health, the environment or property – flammable, explosive, corrosive, toxic or oxidising substances. The international carriage of dangerous goods by road is governed by the ADR Agreement, which classifies goods according to the risk they pose and sets out how they must be packaged, marked and transported.

Requirements for the transport of dangerous goods

The transport of dangerous goods requires accurate information about the cargo: ADR class, UN number, packing group (where applicable), quantity, packaging and other data required for the transport documents. This data is often verified against the safety data sheet or other documents provided by the consignor. Depending on the type of cargo, quantity and route, additional documents or permits may be required.

Packaging and marking

Dangerous goods must be classified, packaged and marked in accordance with the ADR requirements applicable to them. The requirements depend on the UN number, ADR class, quantity, packaging and other properties of the specific cargo. When arranging transport, we rely on the cargo data provided by the consignor or client and use it to assess a suitable transport solution.

Driver and vehicle requirements

Where required under ADR, the driver must hold the relevant ADR certificate and the vehicle must have the prescribed equipment and marking and meet any other requirements applicable to the specific carriage. Before arranging the transport, we assess the classification, quantity and transport conditions of the cargo and, on that basis, select a carrier whose drivers hold ADR certificates and whose vehicles meet the requirements. The carrier is responsible for the compliance of the vehicle and driver during the specific journey.

How do we arrange the transport of dangerous goods?

Before accepting a request, we assess the ADR class, quantity and route of the cargo – this determines which permits and documents will be required. We plan the route taking into account possible ADR restrictions on roads, in tunnels, at border crossings or in urban zones. Where necessary, we also coordinate additional formalities at the border. We recommend planning such shipments in advance, as agreeing the route and obtaining the necessary permits takes longer than for standard cargo.

Who is dangerous goods transport relevant for?

This service is most often relevant to chemical companies, lubricant distributors and manufacturing companies whose operations involve substances or raw materials classed as hazardous. It is also relevant when a small quantity of dangerous goods needs to be transported – in that case it is important to know whether ADR requirements apply at all or whether the cargo falls under an exemption.

What dangerous goods do we transport?

We only arrange the carriage of packaged ADR goods that can be transported in a curtain-side vehicle. The cargo must be properly classified, packaged, marked and prepared for transport in accordance with the applicable ADR requirements. In each case we assess the information provided by the consignor/client and decide whether we can select a suitable vehicle, carrier, the necessary permits and route. If the hazard class or transport conditions fall outside our capabilities, we inform you in advance.

How much does dangerous goods transport cost?

The price depends on the ADR class of the cargo, quantity, route and any additional permits required. A specialised vehicle and stricter safety requirements usually cost more than standard transport, so we quote an exact amount after assessing the specific cargo data. As every ADR consignment differs in its level of risk and requirements, we cannot state a fixed rate in advance.

Carrier’s liability insurance is not cargo insurance: liability under the CMR Convention is usually limited and may not cover the full value of the cargo. If broader cargo protection is required, we agree the option of additional insurance for ADR goods in advance. It depends on the specific cargo, its ADR class, value, route and the insurer’s terms.

FAQ

What documents do I need to provide when sending dangerous goods?

We need data on the ADR class of the cargo, UN number, quantity, packaging and, where applicable, the safety data sheet. We coordinate the preparation of the transport documents based on the information provided by the consignor/client and the conditions of the specific transport.

Are all vehicles suitable for carrying dangerous goods?

Not all of them. The specific vehicle, equipment and marking requirements depend on the UN number, ADR class, quantity and method of carriage of the cargo. Based on this data, we select a suitable vehicle and carrier for the specific transport.

Can you transport dangerous goods abroad?

Yes, we arrange international transport of dangerous goods, taking into account the requirements applied in each country and route restrictions.

What happens if the hazard class of the cargo is determined incorrectly?

An incorrectly stated ADR class may result in the transport being stopped, additional inspections or the need to correct documents. The ADR classification must be provided by the consignor or the client ordering the transport. If the data provided is unclear or incomplete, we ask you to clarify it and provide the required documents before we confirm the transport.

Can I send dangerous goods together with ordinary cargo?

It depends on the UN number, ADR class, quantity and packaging of the specific cargo and its compatibility with other goods. Some dangerous goods can be carried together with other cargo, while others are subject to mixed loading restrictions or require a separate vehicle. We assess this when reviewing your request.

Are there restrictions on when and where dangerous goods can be transported?

Yes, in some countries or on specific roads, in tunnels and urban zones, the transport of dangerous goods may be restricted or completely prohibited at certain times. We take such restrictions into account when planning the route and, if necessary, choose an alternative route or timing according to the ADR class of the specific cargo and the route conditions.
