Freight transport to and from Italy
Freight transport to and from Italy covers a long and diverse territory – from the industrial north to the more distant southern regions. Italy is a member of the European Union, so customs declarations are usually not required on this route. The transit time depends on the specific loading and unloading location, as distances between the northern and southern regions of Italy vary greatly.
Who transports freight to and from Italy?
Freight transport on the Italy route via trans.lt is organised by UAB „Kauno logistikos agentūra“. We select the transport solution according to the size of the cargo, the transit time, the loading and unloading locations and other requirements of the specific shipment.
How does freight transport to and from Italy work?
We assess the nature of the cargo, the volume and the desired transit time, and then choose a full truckload or part-load solution. You will find all the transport steps on the “International freight transport” page.
North and south – different transit times
Northern Italy, where most of the industry is concentrated, can be reached faster than the more distant southern regions. That is why we assess the loading or unloading location in the very first conversation – it has a major impact on journey time and the indicative delivery date. Between the Milan or Turin area and, for example, Sicily or Calabria, the travel time can differ by more than a day, so an exact address helps us prepare a realistic and suitable quote straight away.
When to choose a full truckload and when a part load?
A full truckload (FTL) is more often chosen for larger volumes or when it is important to avoid additional handling stages. A part load (LTL) suits smaller shipments – the transport cost is shared between several clients, so this option can often be more economical. We choose the specific option according to the size of the cargo, the route and the desired transit time.
Communication during transport
The route is long and may include several intermediate handling stages, so clients are interested not only in the delivery date but also in how the cargo is progressing. We coordinate the transport process and keep you informed about the main stages based on the information available. Each client has a dedicated contact person who can be reached by phone or email during working hours to check the status of the cargo.
Insurance and storage on this route
Carrier’s liability (CMR) insurance is not cargo insurance – it covers the carrier’s civil liability under the CMR Convention within the terms and limits of the specific policy. Under the CMR, liability limits are calculated according to the weight of the cargo, not its value.
On this route this is particularly relevant for cargo with a high value relative to its weight, for example certain textile, furniture finishing products or automotive goods. In such cases the CMR limits may be considerably lower than the actual value of the cargo. The long route and part-load consolidation, where additional handling stages may occur, increase this risk further.
For higher-value goods it is therefore worth considering additional cargo insurance. The insurer assesses its availability, coverage limits and price based on the specific cargo and route, and we discuss insurance before confirming the shipment. You can read more about carrier’s liability insurance and additional cargo insurance on our cargo insurance page.
If the cargo requires short-term interim storage, for example while waiting for another shipment for consolidation, we discuss this option in advance together with the transport terms.
What cargo is most commonly transported to and from Italy?
On the Italy route we transport furniture and textiles, food products, automotive components and consumer goods. Freight transport from Italy often includes raw materials and semi-finished products used for further manufacturing in Lithuania or other EU countries. The route is equally relevant for larger manufacturers organising regular freight shipments and for clients arranging a one-off shipment.

FAQ
Are customs documents required when transporting goods to or from Italy?
Customs declarations are usually not required – Lithuania and Italy are EU member states, so the cargo travels as an intra-EU shipment. The cargo must be accompanied by the usual transport and commercial documents. If additional requirements apply to a specific cargo, we discuss them before confirming the shipment.
How long does freight transport from Lithuania to Italy take?
The transit time depends greatly on whether the cargo is going to Northern or Southern Italy, as well as on the specific route. We provide an indicative transit time together with the quote, after assessing the loading and unloading locations and the transport conditions at the time.
Do you organise part-load transport to Italy?
Yes. A part load is suitable when the cargo is smaller or the delivery deadline is not critical. We assess the specific part-load solution and transit time based on the cargo details, the loading and unloading locations and the routes planned at the time.
Does the transit time differ for Northern and Southern Italy?
Yes. The transit time depends on the specific loading or delivery location and the chosen route. Regions of Northern Italy can usually be reached faster than the more distant southern regions, so we provide an indicative transit time after assessing the specific route.
Can you deliver cargo to different regions of Italy on the same trip?
Depending on the chosen route, several delivery points can be combined in one trip. We discuss this when assessing the request based on the cargo details, the loading and delivery locations and the desired transit time.
How does freight transport from Italy to Lithuania work?
The transport principle is similar to the opposite direction: we select the vehicle based on the cargo details, review the information on documents provided by the client and keep you informed about the main transport stages based on the information available.
Can I submit a request online?
Yes. You will find the request form on our website. During working hours we usually reply to requests within 1–2 working hours – with a quote or follow-up questions.
What information should I provide for cargo from Italy?
To help us assess your request quickly, please state the weight, dimensions and quantity of the cargo, the loading location in Italy, the delivery address in Lithuania and the desired date. If the cargo is specific or requires a particular type of vehicle, please mention this straight away. Once we have this information, we will send you a quote or follow-up questions.
Should cargo be additionally insured when transported to or from Italy?
Carrier’s liability (CMR) insurance is not cargo insurance – it covers the carrier’s civil liability under the CMR Convention within the terms and limits of the specific policy, not the full value of the cargo. If broader cover is needed, we arrange additional cargo insurance separately for the specific cargo, subject to the insurer’s terms – we discuss this before confirming the shipment.
Which transport company should I choose for cargo from Italy to Lithuania?
When choosing a transport company for cargo from Italy to Lithuania, it is worth asking for a transit time based on the specific loading address in Italy and the delivery location in Lithuania, not just the country. Journey times from Northern and Southern Italy can differ considerably, so a quote without an exact location does not always allow a realistic estimate of the transit time. It is also worth checking which carrier liability limits would apply to the specific cargo. Under the CMR they are linked to the weight of the cargo, so for light but high-value cargo the carrier’s liability limit may be considerably lower than the actual value of the goods. In that case, it is worth assessing the need for additional cargo insurance in advance. We provide an indicative transit time after assessing the specific loading and delivery address, and discuss the option of additional cargo insurance before confirming the shipment.
